1. How do I register to vote?

You must be 18 years old and a U.S. citizen. You can register in person, by mail or at the Registry of Motor Vehicles. You will receive verification by mail after registering. The annual census is mailed every January 1, if you do not answer it your voting status will be marked inactive and you will not be listed on the active voting list. If you move within town or change your name, you must re-register with the new information. A mail-in voter registration form will be sent to you if requested. 2. Where and When is the annual town meeting and election?

The annual town meeting is held on the first Monday in May. The annual town election is held on the third Saturday in May. All meetings and elections are held at the Town Hall.

3. Where do I vote?

All Whitman voters cast their ballots at the Town Hall, 54 South Avenue, Whitman, Massachusetts, 02382.

4. How do I obtain a birth, marriage, or death certificate?

Vital records are on file in the community where the event occurred and also in the community where residency was listed on the day of the event. Whitman’s vital records are from 1875 to the present time. Certified long form copies are $5 each. They can be requested over the counter or by mailing a $5 check made out to the Town of Whitman, please enclose a self addressed stamped envelope to:

5. How do I license my dog?

The licensing period is July 1 - June 30 each year. A proof of rabies certificate must be presented and proof of neuter or spay must be shown. The cost of licensing is:

• Female / Male - $15
• Spay / Neuter - $10
• Senior rate (over 70) is free

A late fee of $25 is imposed on any license issued after August 31. A rabies clinic is held every year, call the Board of Health for date at 781-618-9755.

6. How do I apply for a marriage license?

Both parties must apply together. There is a three day waiting period after you file your intention. The cost to file is $30. You cannot apply more than 60 days prior to the marriage.

7. How do I get a business certificate (DBA)?

Business certificates are $40 for four years. You and any co-owners must appear in person in the office to sign the business certificate. If any changes occur within the four years, or you discontinue the business, you and any co-owners must come in and file the change for a fee of $10.

8. How do I get a fishing or sporting license?

9. How can I get help with food, rent, or fuel assistance?

The Whitman Food Pantry number is 781-447-8560. Rent, utilities, and fuel assistance is handled through the Council on Aging at 781-447-7619.

10. I have a large item for trash. Who should I call?

Call Waste Management at 800-972-4545 to schedule a pick-up.

11. How can I find out what sports leagues and recreational activities are in Whitman?
