URGENT SEWER SYSTEM NOTICE

         Town of Whitman

         Department of Public Works

         100 Essex St.

         Whitman MA 02382

         (781) 447-7630

URGENT NOTICE TO TOWN OF WHITMAN RESIDENTS:

1.)     Recently we have been experiencing a substantial increase in blockages of sewer

lines and Sewer Station Pumps.  This is due to the flushing of grease and other

items down drains and toilets that do not readily break down and do not dissolve in

      the Sewer Collection System.

  •      These items, such as adult diapers, baby diapers, handy wipes, baby wipes, cloth rags, undergarments, sanitary napkins, “Swiffer” type wiping cloths and “Flushable” wipes block sewer pipes and clog Sewer Station Pumps.
  •      These items do not stay stationary in the Town Collection System as they would in a private septic tank where there are long periods of time between pump outs to break down and dissolve.
  •      This will cause backups of sewerage and property damage, lead to premature failure of Pumping Station Equipment and increased costs to clear and maintain sewer main pipes resulting in Higher Sewer Rates paid by property owners.
  •      All properties connected to the Whitman Sewer Collection System have a sewer lateral pipe connecting only their property to the sewer main.  It is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain and insure that this connecting pipe remains clear. In the event that this pipe becomes blocked it is the responsibility of the property owner to clear and unplug their pipe from their property to the sewer main.
  •

PLEASE DO NOT FLUSH ANYTHING OTHER THAN TOILET TISSUE AND BODY WASTE IN YOUR TOILET.

  •

PLEASE DO NOT POUR GREASE INTO DRAINS OR TOILETS

2.)      If you have a basement or lower level in your home with any type of plumbing

fixtures including, but not limited to, a washing machine, sink, toilet, tub, shower,

laundry tubs, slop sink or any other fixture waste water can drain from, the Town of

Whitman Sewer Department strongly recommends that you have a check valve installed.

This will help prevent sewerage from backing up into your home should the sewer main in the street

become blocked from grease or other illegally flushed items.

The installation of a check valve is a VERY IMPORTANT preventive measure!

  •
  •      If you have any questions or require any additional information about this please call the Dept. of Public Works.

3.)  The Town of Whitman Sewer Department will accept no liability for damages as a result of the occurrences described herein.

4.)   You should also be aware that the storm drains and sanitary sewer mains are

Separate Systems.

PLEASE BE REMINDED THAT IT IS ILLEGAL TO CONNECT THE DISCHARGE OF BASEMENT SUMP PUMPS OR SWIMMING POOL BACKWASH TO THE SANITARY SEWER SYSTEM.

  •
  • THANK YOU FOR YOUR ANTICIPATED COOPERATION.
  •
