About the Board
The establishment of municipal planning boards is authorized by Massachusetts General Law, chapter 41, section 81A. The Planning Board is charged with the primary duty of serving as the local authority for the Subdivision Control Act; adopting rules and regulations governing the subdivision of land in the Town of Whitman. This includes reviewing all preliminary and definitive plan submittals for compliance under the Sub-Division Control bylaws established for our town. The Planning Board consists of seven elected members of varying terms.
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Adopting a master plan and official map of our town
Conducting studies, and, when necessary, preparing plans of the resources, possibilities and needs of our town for submittal to the Selectmen for their consideration
Drafting and submitting zoning amendments for consideration when necessary and hold public hearings when a zoning amendment has been put forward. The board may also report its recommendation to the local legislature.
